THE DESIGN PROCESS
Conceptualize the Characters
• As a designer I am required to create the characters and environments that fit within the world of the story
• I must use my own authentic voice
• Whilst in the industry we will not have full creative control until we are directors, however for this project, we are given carte blanche (unconditional authority)
• Consider the time period of the story, what are the Political, Economic, Social, and Technological factors at the time my character is present (PEST)
• At this stage it is important that I can embody the mind of my character and how they would present themselves to the world
CONCEPT ART DESIGN
Character design concept art is the art of developing characters
• Working from a description handed down by a writer or director, concept artists develop drawings and illustrations that reflect a character’s personality
• Based on their qualities, quirks, and behaviours, what would a character look like?
• If the idea is devised by someone other than the artist themself, it often comes with a description of traits or characteristics. The concept artist begins to formulate a character based on this description
• Mise en scene (meez-ahn-sen) is a term used to describe the setting of a scene in a play or a film. It refers to everything placed on the stage or in front of the camera—including people. In other words, mise en scène is a catch-all for everything that contributes to the visual presentation and overall “look” of a production. When translated from French, it means “placing on stage.”
Character profile
• In order for your character to be authentic you have to make them real
• When creating a character from your imagination it is important to account these factors:
• A fitting name
• Physical characteristics
• Backstory
• Internal and external conflicts, motiv ations and goals
• Flaws and mistakes
• Heroic qualities or potential
• Are they human, a monster, an animal etc?
• All characters have a ‘Character Arc’ which is a path a character takes over the course of a story.

What is the PEST Analysis?
PEST analysis ("political, economic, socio-cultural and technological") describes a framework of macro-environmental factors used in the environmental scanning component of strategic management. It is part of an external analysis when conducting a strategic analysis or doing market research, and gives an overview of the different macro-environmental factors to be taken into consideration. It is a strategic tool for understanding market growth or decline, business position, potential and direction for operations.
Interrelate, interrelated, interrelation are used in situations in which tow or more elements strongly influence each other or are closely linked to each other.
what is the meaning of hard and soft skills?
hard skills
skills that are learned to perform a specific job function and are more easily identifiable and quantifiable
mostly about "how you know"
soft skills
skills that are less tangible, more associated with personality traits, that determine how you interact
mostly about "how you act"

JOB ROLES within Hair & Makeup
H&MU Designer
In film and TV drama, hair and makeup designers help actors portray their characters by using hair and makeup to create a look. In pre-production, they work closely with the director to understand the style of the story.
Prosthetic Makeup Artist
Creates casts, moulds and applies pieces
H&MU Supervisor
Working to production requirements, the Hair and Makeup Supervisor oversees the continuity of hair and makeup throughout the duration of the production. The Supervisor will also co-ordinate the design, application and the storage of products. Usually, they are employed from pre-production to the end of production.
Dailies
Assistants that work on a day-to-day basis usually on large crowd scenes on drama
Personal H&MU
Most of super models have their personal H&MU artist. Only this person can do their makeup and travels with them, so models don't have to look for the H&MU artist by themselves.
H&MU Trainee
Hair and makeup trainees learn by watching more experienced staff and might get to do basis hair and makeup for crowd scenes. They nay even be responsible for some minor characters and stunt doubles, working under supervisor. They are trained in health, safety and hygiene.

What is colour theory?
Color theory is a body of principles which provide guidance on the relationship between colors and the physiological impacts of certain color combinations
On our H&MU course we also tried to make secondary colors from using only primary colors: red, yellow and blue. With red and yellow you get orange, red and blue - purple, yellow and blue - green.

we used two types of body paints to understand how they differ. water-based paints mix well, but they must dry completely, although even after that they leave a residue on the hands.
oil paints again do not need to dry, but the colours are less bright. they are more difficult to wash off than water-based paints. but, as it seems to me, they are not consumed as much as water-based.

Complimentary colours
Complementary colors are pairs of colors which, when combined or mixed, cancel each other out (lose hue) by producing a grayscale color like white or black. When placed next to each other, they create the strongest contrast for those two colors. Complementary colors may also be called "opposite colors".
Analogous colours

Three colors that sit next to one another on the color wheel.
One color will dominate, one will support and another will accent.
shade
A shade darkens the hue by adding black
tint
A tint lightens the hue by adding white, but doesn't make it brighter
tone
A tone is where grey is added to lower the intensity of the hue, making it appear a duller version of itself

What is skin ageing?
Skin ageing is characterised by features such as wrinkling, loss of elasticity and rough-textured appearance.
-
with aging, the outer skin layer (epidermis) thinks;
-
changes in thee connective tissue reduce the skin's strength and elasticity;
-
sebaceous glands produce less oil as you age;
-
pigmented spots including age spots or "liver spots" may appear in sun-exposed areas
What happens to your face as you age?
dark spots on face
weakening of muscle that supports eyelid can make eyelids droop
lips look shrunken
crows feet
loss of teeth may change appearance of mouth
loss of muscle tone
nose may lengthen
eyebrows and eyelashes turn grey
sagging jawls/double chin
What are the factors to skin aging?
INTRINSIC - can't be controlled from the inside
-
genetically determined
-
hormones
-
oxidative stress producing free radicals that attack our cells
EXTRINSIC - factors from external properties
-
sun exposure
-
smoking
-
stress
-
alcohol consumption
-
air pollution
The Fitzpatrick scale
developed in 1975, the system classifies skin type according to the amount of pigment your skin has and your skin's reaction to sun exposure. This information can help predict your overall risk of sun damage and skin cancer.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FILM AND THEATRE AGEING
In TV & Film its important to keep your ageing makeup detailed because of filming quality and different angle of performing.
In theatre it works in other way. As your audience sits quite far, you don't need to spend time on details. It's easier to make more rough and sharp details so people can discern that it's an old person on stage.

Etiquette and
Chiaroscuro
Chiaroscuro, (from Italian chiaro, “light,” and scuro, “dark”), technique employed in the visual arts to represent light and shadow as they define three-dimensional objects.
Angling the light to flatter the face to create a natural contour.
Drawing on the shadows and highlights to create the desired face shape, normally Oval as that is seen as the ‘perfect’ face shape.

Eye shapes
There are no rules when it comes to makeup 一 that’s part of what makes it a fun, creative outlet. However, creating makeup looks that are flattering to your unique features requires a true understanding of your facial structure, especially your eyes.
If you’re hoping to up your eye makeup game and create looks that are ultra flattering for your distinct looks, knowing your eye shape will go a long way.
How To Determine Your Eye Shape
There are six common eye shapes to consider when determining which one you may have 一 monolids, round eyes, almond-shaped eyes, downturned eyes, upturned eyes, and hooded eyes. When determining your eye shape, you have to ask yourself two questions: Do you have an eyelid crease and can you see it?
If you answered no to the first question, there's no need to move on to the second. If you don’t have a crease on your lid, then you have monolids.
Round Eyes
If you have a visible crease in your eyelid and your iris is surrounded by just a touch of white, disconnecting it from your top and bottom eyelid, you have round eyes. Round eyes often have a lot of eyelid real estate to work with, meaning you have the space to create intricate eyeshadow looks like a cut crease or a halo eye look.
Almond Eyes
Your eye shape is almond if you have a visible crease in your eyelid and, unlike those with round eyes, your iris touches both the top and bottom of your eyelid. Almond eyes pair well with sultry looks like smokey eyes, so try creating a deep, smokey look to emphasize your shape.
Downturned Eyes
Your eye shape is downturned if the outer corners of your eyes turn downwards. If you can’t quite tell, imagine drawing a straight line across your eye. If your outer corners turn down beneath the line, your eyes are in fact downturned.
To give your eyes a more wide-open appearance, curl your lashes and apply a curling mascara to draw attention upwards.
Upturned Eyes
If you have upturned eyes, the outer corners of your eyes flick upwards. Use the same approach as you did when checking for downturned eyes to test it out. If your outer corners turn upwards above the line, there you have it.
Hooded Eyes
Your eye shape is hooded if you have a crease, but it isn’t visible because it’s hidden beneath a flap of skin. While hooded eyes regularly occur as you get older and your skin begins to lose its elasticity, it’s also common to be born with hooded eyes.
What is model profile?
A modeling profile is a basic information and a photo taken to showcase one's ability to perform as a model. It is used to promote a model's appearance ability in front of the camera. With a model profile you can easily understand if they suit your character or makeup idea.
Model profile includes such information as photo, name, age, eye and hair color, ethnicity and any additional information the model can have (piercing, tattoos etc.)
Product listing, application order and pose board
You need these things like a chief needs recipe to make a cake. Without a specific order and ingredients you basically couldn't make a tasty cake or good makeup. If you, for instance, are absent on your working place but makeup still needs to be done another artist can look at your product listing and application order so they can make the same makeup without your help.
Product listing includes materials that you use in your makeup (foundation, powder, mascara etc.). Application order is basically how you apply makeup up model. You need to list all steps one by one in a correct order so you will not get lost in it.
Pose board is very similar to any other mood boards. You make it if your model needs to be in a specific pose during photoshoot
