Applying makeup for the teaser trailer and for the actual escape room

I together with a group of makeup artists worked on the makeup of actors for the trailer and the escape-room itself. My main task was to turn the actors into the infected patients, into doctors and the likeness of zombies.

The work of a makeup artist was positioned as the development of looks, the selection and ordering of materials, and in the end the creation of the same looks on the actors. A large role was given to the SFX makeup that went through at the beginning of our course. It includes cuts, burns, bruises, and various makeup techniques. Together with the rest of the students, we created mood-boards with sample characters designs. For the trailer the actors were mostly regular doctors, but we also had a shot of an infected patient on the bed, so she was the first person we tried makeup on.

Some creativity was needed because some materials had to be replaced with others. For example, we depicted cuts only with paint, shadows, and blood, since we simply wouldn't have enough wax for everyone. We recreated the infection with bruise gel. Due to the fact that we had a lot of colours to choose from, we managed to achieve the desired effect.

For the escape-room itself images were needed for infected patients, the head doctor and scaring actors who frightened visitors. For the first ones we used the same techniques as for the girl in the trailer. There were veins, bruises, cuts and patches of infected skin. For the head doctor, one of my groupmates made a burn on her entire arm using gelatin and latex. The scaring actors were the scariest and most difficult to do, as they had to be almost completely covered in makeup. we stained their hands with black paint, some were even covered in blood. with the consent of the actors, some wore white lenses. Also, one of my groupmates worked on hairstyles. In fact, she just made the actors' hair more messy to give their characters a natural look. For the head doctor, when an actress was playing them, she made a messy bun.

For successful work you need interrelations that makeup artists maintained throughout the project. The Producers helped us with ideas for the future characters, the managers agreed with us on the budget and finer details, the costume department helped with the costume (especially needed help with the main doctors and scary actors because their makeup could stain the costumes), as well as the actors themselves, because it is obvious that their makeup we had to do.

Evaluation

I would like to sum up all that we have done in this project.

I got incredible experience working on this type of activity. First of all, I gained more knowledge in the field of makeup and makeup techniques. Teamwork also played a big role, support and understanding is the main key to success.
The make-up team goes through all the stages of creating a project, from the banal development of images to the final result, together with the rest of the departments. Everyone interacts and helps each other. but not without problems. No matter how important mutual support and help, we had problems between the producers and our team. It seemed that this was the end of not only professional but also personal relationships between us as classmates. But after talking, we resolved all the issues and everyone was satisfied with the end result.

We still have a lot to learn both in terms of our professions and in terms of teamwork, since this was our first serious project. Since we are still quite young we have a lot of time to improve our communication skills and professionalism. In building a career, the main thing is not to let emotions take over and think in reference, only then you can succeed.
